It is important to feel like you have enough information about the operation and follow up care. Please feel free to ask as many questions you want to. Talk to your doctor. Learn what to expect before, during and after surgery. Ask about the process of being admitted to  the hospital, the type of anaesthesia you might need, the type of implant that will be used, the length of stay n the hospital, rehabilitation and pain management.Also, don’t hesitate to ask about potential complications that might be associated with the procedure.

ASSEMBLE YOUR PERSONAL AND MEDICAL INFORMATION

Once you and your orthopaedic surgeon have decided to go ahead with surgery, in the weeks leading to surgery you will need answers about your insurance coverage, medical history, and legal and personal arrangements such as – designate a family member or friend who will be your primary contact to receive and clarify all information received from your doctor. A list of doctors you currently see. A list of medical conditions, and all previous operations.Before the surgery you must advise your surgeon of any health problems or medication you are on including those that are not bone and joint operations. You may be advised by your doctor to temporarily stop taking some medications prior to your surgery to prevent bleeding complications. Also make a list of any allergies or adverse reactions you have had to drugs or anesthesia in the past.

GET IN SHAPE FOR SURGERY

Most of these common sense suggestions can benefit you and help in speedy recovery

  • Don’t have any alcohol for at least 48 hours before surgery
  • Smoking changes blood flow patterns, delays healing and slows recovery. Cut down or quit smoking
  • Narcotics and other drugs can have an impact on surgery
  • Eat well. If you are over weight, your doctor may recommend a weight loss program
  • Ask your doctor for pre-surgical exercises. If you are having hip or knee replacement surgery certain upper body exercises could strengthen your upper body strength
  • Prepare and understand your post operative exercises
